Rescuers, yesterday, recovered the charred body of the man refueling the generator that ignited fire at the Dosunmu market on Tuesday. His body was found almost 24 hours after the fire incident.
Also, eight other persons suffered from carbon monoxide inhalation, while one sustained a fracture, in the incident. The Guardian gathered that all the injured persons were treated and discharged on the scene by the Emergency Management Service.
The devastating fire swept through Docemo area in Lagos Island, causing collapse of eight buildings and severe damages to 14 buildings.Also, goods and property worth millions of naira were destroyed.
The response from the National Emergency Management Agency, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), The Lagos Neighborhood Watch prevented the fire from damaging more buildings in the market.
Though the dampening down operations were still in progress yesterday, emergency workers are assessing the extent of damage with a view to enacting preventive measures.
Meanwhile, the mopping up exercise continues with the excavation of rubbles from the remains of the fire to bring the operations to a conclusion. The Director General of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Margaret Adeyeye said the agency will continue to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Territorial Office, Ibrahim Farinloye, told The Guardian that more buildings will be pulled down in the market because of the effect of the fire.
Farinloye maintained that the people must put safety ahead of security and set up fire marshals to tackle emergencies. The incident is the fifth in 2024 at the Lagos Island market despite the spirited enlightenment campaigns conducted within the vicinity.
